Outcome for primary research
Focus group
When I originally decided to do this focus group, there was meant to be some people in it, however when it came to doing it, they could not, also there was people in this that was chosen at last minute. I have not done a focus group before, this was interesting to me, to see what people’s thoughts and opinions. Within this focus group I had people with and without mental health issues, I did this so that there would be a mixture of people, with me doing this I got a mixture of opinions and views, which was helpful and interesting.
What was it?
This was a type of primary research I did to get peoples thoughts and opinions on my idea, I get multiple people to answer some questions in an open discussion, doing this allowed people to say what they wanted to base on what other people had said. I have not done one of these before, therefore I did not know how it was going to go, although it was interesting to do because some of the people had not met before, however this did not impact them speaking.
Why did you pick the people?
Some of the people in the focus group I intentionally chose, like I had planned for them to be in it, however other people it was a last-minute decision because some of the people I originally chose could not come in, therefore I needed new people to replace them. However, all the people in the focus group are part of my target audience, therefore their opinion is valid because they are the ones who are going to share my product, speak about it, getting it more well-known, so hearing what they think of it is helpful because it shows me how to make it more interesting to them. Also, some of these people have mental health issues and some do not, therefore it is coming from wo different types of people.
What did you learn from it?
I learnt that not everyone is comfortable being in a group of people, even if just one person thy do not know, I know this because some of the people involved in this did not speak throughout the whole things, therefore they just sat there not doing anything, which means them being in it was not needed, however I did not know this before doing it. I also learn that going with the flow is the main part of a focus group because at one point someone said something and then someone else wanted them to expand on their point (explain what had been said), however they did not want to, which lead to a bit of tension in the room, although this did not affect the rest of the focus group. With both people with and without mental health issues answering the questions, it showed what is needed to be included, for people to learn more, knowing this is helpful so I can help the most people.
What did you gain from it?
It showed me why they are my target audience, made it more clear and knowing this will be helpful when it comes to making my final product because I know how to approach the topic, to make it appeal to them, to help them the more I can, this is useful as I do not want to offend anyone and they said to approach it “maturely”, with knowing this I will be careful as to how I phrase things because this can affect how it comes across. “Add links, and numbers”, doing this will help more people because they will encourage them into speaking to a professional.
Was it helpful? Why?
Caitlin and Nicky spoke all the way through, answered every question, however these are the only ones that did this, the other people did answer some of the questions, however not in full, like Caitlin and Nicky did, therefore the other people was just there not really doing anything, what they was saying was not overly helpful, (some of it was), however they was very blunt with what they was saying, therefore it was straight to the point no confusion, then Caitlin and Nicky expanded on their point, saying their opinion on other people’s answers. Knowing this I know to not include some of these people in another focus group because some of them just said their name and just sat there for the rest of it, which is not helpful, however there was nine of them, therefore this could’ve been a little overwhelming, even if they knew most of them. I would not use as many people next time as from doing this one it showed me that it is not how many people you have, it is who you chose.
Interviews
For my interviews I had multiple sets of questions because I had people with different mental illnesses answering them, therefore they all needed different questions, not just this but not just this I also had a set of questions for people that do not have a mental illness, this was so I could get opinions from both sides and overall it was really helpful and interesting seeing the difference in their answers, it will help me with my project because their answers have given me new ideas as to how to show my product. I also did a set of questions about the documentary as a whole, for example: I asked, “how do you think the topic of mental health should be approached”, asking this to my target audience was really helpful as I want to do it in a way that will interest and help them as much as possible, so overall I learnt a lot from doing these interviews and will help with my final product.
Caitlin jones
Why I did it?
I did these interviews because Caitlin is not diagnosed with any mental health issues, therefore she has not suffered with it herself, getting her thoughts and opinions on my project was interesting to see what she knew because she is part of my target audience, therefore hearing what she already knows about it makes me aware as to where she lacks information, knowing this I know what I need to include in my documentary. Hearing what she thinks I should include is helpful because she is part of the audience I am mainly focusing on because I am trying to raise awareness about mental health and educate those who do not know much about it, especially those who are not diagnosed, motivating them into getting diagnosed. I got her to do a written interview and a interview, asking similar questions this is because doing this showed me the difference in their answers, to see if they are better at expressing their opinion by speaking or writing.
Why you picked the person?
I chose Caitlin because she is not diagnosed with any kind of mental health, therefore her opinion is interesting, to see what she already knows, seeing what she needs to learn, this is helpful because it shows me what I need to include in the documentary to make sure I educate people about mental health, motivating them to get diagnosed, to get help. Also, she is very opinionated, so I knew she would have a lot to say about this with it being such a big thing and her opinion on this was on this topic, see what she knows, if she needs to know more.
What have I learned from it?
I learned, that even if you do not have mental health issues personally, you can still know quite a bit about it, however she still lacks some knowledge on it, however this is the whole point I am making the documentary, although now knowing what she needs to know I know what to include in my product. She said I need to do loads of research beforehand, make sure I take it seriously because if I go into it with no knowledge I could offend people, having more knowledge on the topic could help with how I word things. She knows a few types of mental health, however not all of them, therefore this is where she lacks knowledge. I also learn that Caitlin is more expressive when it comes to an interview, compared to an interview because she did both written and video, form doing that I can see she had more to say, than write, I find this interesting because it shows which she is better at doing.
How did it affect your thinking of the product?
It affected my thinking by showing me what I need to include, to make sure I educate as many people as possible, the more they know the better because that means I will be helping more people which is amazing. Helping others and knowing more about the topic is the reason I am doing it, especially those that do not have mental health themselves, I say this because they may lack knowledge of it more, compared to someone that is diagnosed because they have more experience with it, especially from a personal point of view. Showed me that my product can help to educate a lot of people about the different types of mental health.
Alex Wilson
Why I did it?
I did these interviews because he has suffered for years with mental illnesses, it helped me to have a better understanding of the topic, which will help with the final product. He is easy to talk to, therefore asking him the questions, there was no fuss or stress, it was very quick and easy, even with him doing more than one set of questions. I got him to do both written and video interviews, doing this showed me the difference between his answers, showing me this showed me which is his strong point, from doing both I can see he is better at video because he expressed his opinion in more detail, when he did his written one, it was very blunt answers, however in the video one it was also blunt answers, although it was clear as top what he meant due to facial expression and body language.
Why you picked the person?
He has a very good understanding of mental health because he has suffered with it for years, therefore I knew he would give vert detailed answers, educating myself and others more on the topic, this is helpful to myself because he is acting in my product so getting to know a little about his story from doing these interviews it has shown me roughly what kind of questions I can ask, to get the best answers I can, to help as many people as possible.
What have I learned from it?
I learned what psychosis is, how it can affect people daily, it is very scary, I learnt his opinion is very valid for my product and I am glad he did all these interviews for me because it will help when it come to my final product because I now have a better understanding as to what some of the different types of mental health are, how they can affect you (etc.) (etc.). I also learnt that if even someone gives small answers, that does not mean it is a bad interview, what I mean by this is that Alex did not answer the questions in full, however the answers he gave is enough, he said the main points that was needed, therefore no explanation was needed, it was quick, easy, and straight to the point.
How did it affect your thinking of the product?
It affected by thinking of the product by showing me that it does not matter if my product is short, long as the main points are said and shown, what I mean by this not everything needs to be explained, being blunt is sometimes the best way for things to be explained and come across. It can be a easier way to learn because it can lead to less confusion which is always a positive, however this is not always the case, this is why during some of the questions I asked a question about Ale’s answer, this was to get him to expand on his answers, doing this helped his point to come across in the way it was needed and helped me and others to get a better understanding as to what he was trying to say.
Tommy Barnett
Why I did it?
I did this interview because he does not suffer with mental health personally, therefore seeing what he already knows is interesting because it will help to see where he lacks in information, knowing this will help me, so I know what I need to include. He is a very chilled and relaxed person, therefore seeing what he had to say about the topic and documentary was really interesting because it is a very extreme, overpowering topic so seeing someone with that kind of personality say their thoughts was interesting, to see what they know and how they would word things because how you word things really effects how it can come across, like if he says something wrong or not how he intentionally meant it, people might take it differently to how it is said. I got him to do both written and video interviews, doing this showed me the difference in his answers and form doing both of these I found out he had more to say in the written interview.
Why you picked the person?
I chose tommy because he is a very chilled and relaxed person, therefore seeing what he has to say about an extreme topic is interesting because I thought he would either have a lot to say or hardly anything and from doing the interview, it was a mixture on these two things.
What have I learned from it?
He made it clear that if someone came to him suffering with mental health he would try his best to help them, rather than just telling them to speak to someone else about it, I think this is good, especially since he does not suffer with mental health himself because he will not know as much as someone who has suffered personally or a specialist, but with him saying he would do his best to help them is a positive. He knows a few types of mental health, however not all of them, therefore this is where he lacks knowledge, but therefore I am making the documentary. Form doing both written and video interviews, I can see he is better at video because he explained his opinion/point in more detail, allowing a better understanding as to how he is meaning to come across because how things are worded really impact as to how it can come across.
How did it affect your thinking of the product?
This affected my thinking on the product by showing me that even if people do not suffer with mental health themselves and they are not a specialist, they can still help others, as best they can, however it depends on the kind of person they are because some people are not the best at advice, therefore may just advice you to go see a specialist.
Nicky Kirk
Why I did it?
I did this interview to find out more about the topic to see, what my target audience need to learn about it, what I mean by this is that knowing what my target audience on the topic is helpful because I can see what they know and what they need to know, therefore after doing this I know how to approach my product in the best way, to help the most people.
Why you picked the person?
I chose this person because he is very opinionated and I thought it would be interesting to see his opinion on this topic, also seeing what he knows about the topic already is helpful because I can see where he lacks areas, knowing this I know what I need to include in the documentary.
What have I learned from it?
He said if he found out from another person that someone was suffering, so not from that person themselves, he would talk to their parents about it, however if they them him themselves, he said he would help them by listening to them, depending on how bad what they are saying is, he would encourage them into going to the doctors about it. He took some questions more serious than others, what I mean by this is that he said some answers that were not relevant to the interview. He knew some types of mental health, however with how ended the question it gave me the impression that he knows more than what was said. He said to go into it “steady”, what he means by this is that I need to be careful as to how I say things, so I do not offended people, he also said “make your it is with consent” , what he means is that I need to make sure the people or person I include in the documentary, I need to make sure they are okay with being in it. He said, “the more the merrier”, what he meant by this is the more mental health is spoken about the better, therefore it can never eb spoken about enough. He said it would be very educational, especially if I use people that suffer themselves and that people are going to learn more about mental illnesses. He said it will encourage others into getting diagnosed, if they can relate to it, which is a positive because it is always better to be diagnosed because you are more aware of it and can get the help you need.
How did it affect your thinking of the product?
It has affected my thinking on the product by showing me that even if someone does not suffer with mental health themselves, they still know information about it, though they do not know as much someone that does suffer, although hearing their opinion is interesting because it shows me what they need to know, knowing this shows me what I need to include in my documentary, to help as many people as I can.
Harriet worthy
Why I did it?
I did this interview because they are part of my target audience, see what someone that is part of it need to know, their opinion on the topic, if they like my idea, how they think I should present it, how things should be said and their opinion matters because it is them that help to get it more well-known, so having their opinion is helpful because I can take their thoughts and ideas into consideration when it comes to planning. I got her to do both written and video interviews, to see the difference in her answers.
Why you picked the person?
I picked their person because she has anxiety herself, so her opinion is coming from a personal point of view, it was interesting hearing what she had to say because she has had anxiety for a while therefore, she knows quite lot about it and hearing what she knows was educational.
What have I learned from it?
I have learnt that even if someone has a mental health issue, they may not have a lot to say about it because they have had it for so long that they just “get on with it”, with knowing this information I will make sure to include information about anxiety, so that people get a better understanding of it. I also learnt that she is better at video interviews because she explained her point of view in more detail, this gave me a better understanding as to how she was coming across, what she meant.
How did it affect your thinking of the product?
it has affected my thinking by showing me that not everyone has a lot to say about their issues, however that is their own choice what they wish to share, but it has shown me that I need to include information to help people speak up about their issues, making them realise that they have mental health themselves.
Agata Kleba
Why I did it?
To get an opinion from my target audience, seeing their thoughts and opinions, seeing what they think I need to include, will be helpful, doing this will help me help the most people because I will be making it as appealing to my audience as I can. I got her to do both written and video interviews, doing this shows me the difference in their answers, which they gave better answers in.
Why you picked the person?
I picked Agata because she suffers with mental health issues herself, therefore her opinion is coming from a personal point of view, therefore this will help to get a better understanding about different mental health types, knowing this will help to know how to approach the topic. Also, she is a very opinionated person, therefore seeing what she had to say about this topic would be interesting because I knew she would have a lot of information to say.
What have I learned from it?
I have leant more about different types of mental health; this is helpful for my project because I have a better understanding as to what I need to include in my documentary. I also learn that she is better at video interviews because she explained her point in more detail, allowing a better understanding as to how she wants to come across.
How did it affect your thinking of the product?
It showed me that it is important to use people that suffer with mental health personally because then it is coming form a personal point of view, from people that understand the topic more, doing this will help more people because this will make it more realistic.
Written interviews
From doing this I learnt that some people do not have much to say on a screen, however when it comes to them doing their on camera interview they might have more to say, however I understand if people do not have much to say about their own personal experience because it is a very personal topic and is hard to speak about, I also understand if those that do not have mental health issues do not know what to say because they may not know what to say or how to word it. I found it helpful doing these written interviews to see the difference as to what those who have mental illnesses and those who don’t, the difference in the information that they know. From doing these interviews I have learnt that a lot of peoples triggers for anxiety are similar, not just this but the ways in which they help themselves are also similar, this is interesting, and I may include this in the documentary to help others because they are common answers from my target audience.
Morgan Pepper
Why I did it?
I did this to gain more information from my target audience, learning more about their opinion on the topic, helping me to know how to approach the topic, so I can make it as appealing to them as I can.
Why you picked the person?
I chose this person because she does not suffer with mental health personally, however a lot of her friends do, therefore she is like the therapist friend, giving advice when needed, even though she does not suffer herself, she tries her best to help others as much as she can. Therefore, seeing her opinion on the topic is interesting because I know she likes to help others, so seeing what she thinks of this topic is interesting.
What have I learned from it?
I have learnt that even if someone does not suffer with mental illness, they can still help others, which is interesting because they have not dealt with that themselves, but they still want to help others. She did not know many types of mental health; however, she did know some,
How did it affect your thinking of the product?
Showed me that if someone do snot suffer personally, they can still help others even if they do not know a lot about the topic, however knowing the main parts of mental health would be helpful when it comes to helping others because you have a better understanding on the topic, which is something my documentary can help people with.
Agata Kleba
Why I did it?
I did this to gain more information from my target audience, learning more about their opinion on the topic, helping me to know how to approach the topic, so I can make it as appealing to them as I can.
Why you picked the person?
She has suffered with mental health personally for years; therefore, it is coming from a personal point of view, she also knows a few people that have mental health issues; therefore, she has helped people with their issues and helped herself with her own. I did both a written interview and an interview with her, doing this shows the difference in the answers, which they explained more in; however, I did change the questions a bit for the interviews, this was so I could get more detail from their answers.
What have I learned from it?
I have learnt that if people have different mental health types, there are different reasons as to why each one started, this is interesting because this means they have gone through multiple different things for each one to of started, which is very upsetting. This also means that they have s tory for each type of mental health, meaning they have a lot of say about mental health, however this is not the case for anyone.
How did it affect your thinking of the product?
it has shown me that it is important to use someone that has mental health issues themselves and use more than one person if possible, however just one person is enough if that person has multiple different types.
Sebastian Pisarczyk
Why I did it?
I did this to gain more information from my target audience, learning more about their opinion on the topic, helping me to know how to approach the topic, so I can make it as appealing to them as I can.
Why you picked the person?
I chose this person as I did not have many people answer questions about OCD, therefore getting another person was interesting, to see if their answers were different from the other person, to see if it is different for other people, I do not know a lot about this, therefore seeing what they have to say is interesting because it helps me to learn more about the topic.
What have I learned from it?
I have learnt that his answers were very blunt, however they were very straight to the point, therefore there was no confusion for me because the answer was there in black and white. I learn that OCD can affect someone’s day to day life, the way it affects Seb, is that every time he has to leave the house he has to check things, like doors to see if they are locked, this is something that someone without OCD does, however for Seb, he has to do this every time he leaves the house, multiple time, or it will trigger his mind, making him panic.
How did it affect your thinking of the product?
The person I am using for my FEP does not have OCD, however learning more about it was interesting because I can include some facts and statics about it, doing this may encourage others into speaking up about their issues, making them realise that they have it, doing this will educate myself and others on this type of mental health, which is a positive as this is the whole reason, I am doing this documentary.
Harry Lathe
Why I did it?
I did this to gain more information from my target audience, learning more about their opinion on the topic, helping me to know how to approach the topic, so I can make it as appealing to them as I can.
Why you picked the person?
I chose this person because he has more than one mental health issue, therefore he did more than one set of questions, which meant I got more information about the topic, form a personal point of view.
What have I learned from it?
He found out he had anxiety by research it, however he has not been diagnosed by a professional doctor, therefore technically he does not have anxiety, he is self-diagnosing. However, he does go to therapy but not for anxiety alone. He had more to say about OCD, however again he said, “I did some research”, which makes me think that he is self-diagnosing himself again, meaning he has not had a professional tell him he has it, however it was still interesting to see what his opinion is.
How did it affect your thinking of the product?
It has shown me that even if someone is self-diagnosing, they can still know a lot about the topic, however I think my project would help him because hopefully it would encourage him into speaking up about his issues and getting diagnosed.
Alex Wilson
Why I did it?
I did this to gain more information from my target audience, learning more about their opinion on the topic, helping me to know how to approach the topic, so I can make it as appealing to them as I can.
Why you picked the person?
I chose this person because he suffers with mental health personally and has multiple different types, meaning he knows a lot about this topic, therefore his opinion is valid as her is part of my target audience, not only this but he is being in my documentary and telling his story, so seeing what he says to these questions was interesting because it gives a brief as to what he will say in the documentary, however this is in written form.
What have I learned from it?
I have learnt that having multiple different types of mental health issues can be stressful because they can affect you on the day-to-day basis, stopping you from doing things, therefore being motivated for doing things is difficult because when it comes to doing something, their mental health kicks in making it more difficult to do day to day things. I learnt that alcohol could play a big part in depression, triggering it to get worse, the why he watches how much he drinks, by only drinking on special occasions and when he does this, he makes sure someone watches how much he drinks, to make sure it does not trigger the depression into becoming worse.
How did it affect your thinking of the product?
It showed me that when he tells his story it will help a lot of people because he has a lot to say about different types of mental health, even though this was just a written interview, I can tell he has a lot more to say, which will hopefully encourage a lot of people into speaking up about their issues, seeing a professional about it, getting diagnosed.
Reece Walton
Why I did it?
I did this to gain more information from my target audience, learning more about their opinion on the topic, helping me to know how to approach the topic, so I can make it as appealing to them as I can.
Why you picked the person?
I chose this person because he suffers with anxiety personally, however he doe not speak about it a lot, meaning I do not think a lot of his family and friends know that he has it, however this is useful because the documentary may be helpful to him, into speaking up about his issues, seeing specialists about it, getting help for it. I think it is interesting to see what he as to say about it as he does not speak about it often, therefore seeing what he was willing to say was interesting as it is such a personal topic.
What have I learned from it?
I learnt that even someone who is really reserved, quiet, can still give good answers, when they put their mind to it and think about what is being asked, it has shown me that anyone can have anxiety and hide it, knowing this is helpful because I am wanting to help others know it is okay to speak up and that they are not alone. It showed me that it can depends on the kind of person you are if you speak up about things, for example: if you are quiet and reserved, it is unlikely that you will speak up about it however, if you are confident, loud, you are more likely to, although this is not always the case.
How did it affect your thinking of the product?
It showed me that all kind of different people, with different personalities can have mental health issues, therefore I need to come across in a way that’ll help as many people as possible, however I think with Alex having multiple different stories this will help to do this because he will be telling them all in different ways, therefore this will appeal to a big audience, meaning it’ll help a lot of people.
Emma jones
Why I did it?
I did this to gain more information from my target audience, learning more about their opinion on the topic, helping me to know how to approach the topic, so I can make it as appealing to them as I can.
Why you picked the person?
I chose this person because she is not officially diagnosed with anxiety however, she does show a lot of signs she has anxiety, however I think my documentary would be helpful to Emma, to help encourage her into speaking up about how she feels and hearing what she had to say was interesting because of this, she has experienced panic attacks and is uncomfortable speaking to people she does not know.
What have I learned from it?
Who you surround yourself with really impacts the way you feel like for example when Emma says, “I find it quite hard to define my true emotions and usually just seeing my friends is therapeutic enough”, showing what kind of energy people have, reflects on how you feel and act. I also learn that music can also impact how people feel and act, what I mean by this is that “Music tends to help me with my anxiety. Especially on buses or crowded places as it puts my mind at ease. If having no music to listen to would be the case, then I would try think about things that are contended”, with it shows that music helps calm anxiety.
How did it affect your thinking of the product?
It showed me that I need to include information about being diagnosed and why to get diagnosed because this is good information to have due to self-diagnosing being very unhealthy due to it impacting the way you think/see things, however looking online about mental health is a good place to start, although going to the doctors about it is always a good thing.
Chloe Lynas
Why I did it?
I did this to gain more information from my target audience, learning more about their opinion on the topic, helping me to know how to approach the topic, so I can make it as appealing to them as I can.
Why you picked the person?
I chose this person as she is a new person I have met, therefore I thought it would be interesting to see what she had to say because I did not know her view on it, however she is very wise and positive, so seeing what she had to say, to learn more about her.
What have I learned from it?
I learnt that anxiety can be caused by more than one thing, whether it is big or small, it can affect everyone differently. Also, many different things can trigger it, therefore it is hard to avoid, therefore it can affect people on the daily because it is triggered by normal day to day things.
How did it affect your thinking of the product?
It has shown me that people with anxiety that have done these written interviews most have said that it is triggered by stress, and they help themselves with music and seeing friends and family for advice, this is if they are diagnosed or not. Showing me that I need to mention this in my documentary, so that people have ways they can get help.

Why you picked the person?
I chose this person because she keeps herself to herself, in a way that she does not really talk about her feelings, therefore hearing her opinion is interesting. She has anxiety herself, so her opinion is coming from a personal point of view, it was interesting hearing what she had to say because she has had anxiety for a while therefore, she knows quite lot about it and hearing what she knows was educational.
What have I learned from it?
That just thinking of past events, it can trigger people’s anxiety.
How did it affect your thinking of the product?
It has shown me that I need to include ways people can distract themselves, therefore this will help peoples mind not focus on their anxiety.
Catie Lincoln
Why I did it?
I did this to gain more information from my target audience, learning more about their opinion on the topic, helping me to know how to approach the topic, so I can make it as appealing to them as I can.
Why you picked the person?
I chose this person because she has suffered personally with different types of mental health, also with her only being young, this is another reason as well because she is part of my target audience, also she is very opinionated and seeing her thoughts, opinion and personal thoughts on the topic.
What have I learned from it?
How things are said (how they are worded), can really affect and impact how someone takes it, what I mean by this is that sometimes things can come across differently to how are said. Mental health can always improve, however once you are diagnosed, it can never fully go away, there is no recovery for it, there is no getting better, there is just improving.
How did it affect your thinking of the product?
I think the fact that there is no “recovery” with any mental health, this is something that needs to be spoken about more because some people will have goals and think that it will eventually go away completely, however if they knew it can only improve, I think this would be a real eye opener for some people. This is something I will make sure to make clear in my documentary however, I will be careful with how I word it as I do not want to trigger or cause offence to anyone.
Regan Beever
Why I did it?
I did this to gain more information from my target audience, learning more about their opinion on the topic, helping me to know how to approach the topic, so I can make it as appealing to them as I can.
Why you picked the person?
I chose this person because she is very reserved and quiet about her mental health, therefore seeing what she was willing to say was interesting because it is a very serious and delicate thing to talk about.
What have I learned from it?
Anxiety can stop you from doing things, especially new things, therefore when it comes to doing new things, it will require a lot of thought to go into it beforehand.
How did it affect your thinking of the product?
It has shown me that I need to include ways to help people when it comes to doing simple things like leaving the house because if it affects people every time they go to do new things.
Saffron Wilson
Why I did it?
I did this to gain more information from my target audience, learning more about their opinion on the topic, helping me to know how to approach the topic, so I can make it as appealing to them as I can.
Why you picked the person?
I chose this person because she is very mature, opinionated and has her own mental health issues as well, therefore her opinion is valid because she is part of my target audience, not just this but also from a personal level.
What have I learned from it?
Anxiety can affect you both mentally and physically, this means that with some people, depending on how their anxiety affects them, you will be able to see the symptoms, however everyone suffers with it differently, therefore it may be difficult to identify this.
How did it affect your thinking of the product?
This has shown me that I need to include both physical and mental symptoms, this is because it will make more people aware that they have anxiety, therefore helping more people encouraging them into seeing specialists, getting diagnosed.
Caitlin Jones
Why I did it?
I did this to gain more information from my target audience, learning more about their opinion on the topic, helping me to know how to approach the topic, so I can make it as appealing to them as I can.
Why you picked the person?
I chose Caitlin because she is not diagnosed with any kind of mental health, therefore her opinion is interesting, to see what she already knows, seeing what she needs to learn, this is helpful because it shows me what I need to include in the documentary to make sure I educate people about mental health, motivating them to get diagnosed, to get help. Also, she is very opinionated, so I knew she would have a lot to say about this with it being such a big thing and her opinion on this was on this topic, see what she knows, if she needs to know more.
What have I learned from it?
That just by having people around you with mental health issues, this can help to educate you on the topic, also just by speaking to others, a simple “how are you”, can go a long way in making someone feel better because it shows you care and are thinking of them. Knowing the different types of mental health is important, especially knowing the signs of someone having them, this is because it will help others help people suffering, whether the are a professional or not, just getting someone to have a convocation about it, is the first step.
How did it affect your thinking of the product?
It has shown me that it is important for me to include facts and statistics of mental health issues, even if Alex does not have them to talk about, this is because I want to try and educate people on as many different types of mental illnesses as possible.

Why I did it?
I did this to gain more information from my target audience, learning more about their opinion on the topic, helping me to know how to approach the topic, so I can make it as appealing to them as I can.
Why you picked the person?
I chose this person because I was interesting to see her opinion/thoughts and personal point of view.
What have I learned from it?
I have learnt that some people with mental health do not do anything to help with it, they just “deal with it” and get on with life, doing new things can be a big trigger for anxiety as it is something that the brain is unfamiliar with, therefore this may take some getting used to.
How did it affect your thinking of the product?
it has shown me that some people would rather not see a professional about their issues because they have other ways of making themselves feel better, improving their mental health.
Hayley Roberts
Why I did it?
I did this to gain more information from my target audience, learning more about their opinion on the topic, helping me to know how to approach the topic, so I can make it as appealing to them as I can.
Why you picked the person?
I chose this person because I am not that close with them as they live at the other side of the world (Australia), I do not know a lot about their mental health therefore, I thought it would be interesting to see what she has to say, not just this but I thought it would be helpful as what she is saying is coming from a personal point of view, therefore she is very educated on this topic, meaning her opinion is valid because she is part of my target audience.
What have I learned from it?
She was diagnosed at 23 years old, however has had it since she was 15, therefore it took her a long time to be diagnosed, which is interesting as this is something I am trying to encourage people to do, to get diagnosed as soon as possible. When she saw specialists about her mental health in school, they was not very helpful, I think this is something that needs to change in the way that, there should be more professional that students can have access to, not only this but for it to be well-known that they are there, this is because it will allow more people to speak up about their issues knowing that there is a trusted adult there to listen to them.
How did it affect your thinking of the product?
It has shown me that it is important that I include resources within the documentary both at beginning and end, for places people can call to talk to someone, places people can text someone and helpful websites, this is because people like to say their issues I different ways and there are loads of resources for this however, they are not very well known and with them being included it will help with this (hopefully).
Leena Taylor
Why I did it?
I did this to gain more information from my target audience, learning more about their opinion on the topic, helping me to know how to approach the topic, so I can make it as appealing to them as I can.
Why you picked the person?
I chose this person as she has suffered with mental health for years, has been through a lot at a young age, therefore seeing her opinion was interesting, especially with it coming from a personal level.
What have I learned from it?
I have learnt that distracting yourself is one of the best ways to improve how you feel and your mental health, this is because it gets your mind off it, even if comes back on your mind, finding ways to distract yourself while you are on your own is important as you need to be able to be in your own company without your mental health being at its worse, in other words you need to be happy in your own company. Like finding resources like colouring books, jigsaws and reading, things that do not involve going on your phone, this is because being on your phone can be quite stressful.
How did it affect your thinking of the product?
It has shown me that it is important to ask Alex what he does to help himself, this is because it will encourage others into speaking up about their issues, however I need to make sure these are effective, but also state and make it clear that these may not be effective for everyone, however I will also include helplines at the beginning and end of he documentary.
Adam Akhtar
Why I did it?
I did this to gain more information from my target audience, learning more about their opinion on the topic, helping me to know how to approach the topic, so I can make it as appealing to them as I can.
Why you picked the person?
I chose this person because he has gone through a lot with only being nineteen years old, I think seeing his opinion/view/personal experience with mental health, therefore his opinion is valid, making him part of my target audience.
What have I learned from it?
The change in the music type you listen to, it can sometimes affect your mood, this is due to the lyrics being sung and the tone, which is interesting because of the huge impact music can have on your mood. Also, reducing time on social media may improve your mood and mental health because of the negative energy, vibe on social media can really impact on how you feel, this is due to the kinds of things being shown, like body positivity, there is a lot of stereotypes on social media, for us to be a certain way.
How did it affect your thinking of the product?
This has shown me that reducing your time on social media can impact how you feel, therefore I think I will include this in my product, however I will research this so I can phrase this in the best way, to make sure I do not cause any offense from my viewers, as this is the opposite as to what I am trying to do.
Tommy Barnett
Why I did it?
I did this to gain more information from my target audience, learning more about their opinion on the topic, helping me to know how to approach the topic, so I can make it as appealing to them as I can.
Why you picked the person?
I chose tommy because he is a very chilled and relaxed person, therefore seeing what he has to say about an extreme topic is interesting because I thought he would have a lot to say.
What have I learned from it?
I learnt that he is better at written interviews compared to video, this is because he explained his point more, helping to get a better understanding of his point. Also, even if someone does not have mental health, they can still be useful when it comes to helping others, however they will not have as much knowledge as someone who has mental health issues. Another thing, from reading his answers, I can tell he has researched this topic in detail, therefore has some form of understanding of it.
How did it affect your thinking of the product?
It has shown me that it is important to include opinion form people with and without mental health issues, this is because it shows a view from both sides, therefore allows viewers to learn more about the topic, however I think in my documentary I am just using people with mental, this is because it will be coming from a personal point of view allowing people with and without mental health issues to learn more about the topic, educating people on the topic, encouraging them into speaking up about their issues.
Katie Simpson
Why I did it?
I did this to gain more information from my target audience, learning more about their opinion on the topic, helping me to know how to approach the topic, so I can make it as appealing to them as I can.
Why you picked the person?
I chose this person because she is quite close to me, therefore I know she suffers with mental health issues, she is very mature and can be quite opinionated, so I thought it would be interesting to see her thoughts and personal experience with mental health because this will allow me to learn more about the topic.
What have I learned from it?
I have learnt that mental health can come and go but it never goes completely, however it can improve overtime and with help. Even if you see a professional about it, just seeing them may not be helpful, but what they suggest may be, what I mean by this is that talking does not work for everyone. Being diagnosed as soon as possible is a positive because this allows you to get help and find out what best works for you, allowing improvement to start straight away.
How did it affect your thinking of the product?
It has shown me that services are not that only thing that help people, what I mean by this is that just going out for walks, spending time with friends can help to improve people’s mindset.
Survey
Survey 1: Mental Health
There is reason why I did this survey is because I wanted to see what people knew about the topic, this is because I think if people knew more, they would know how to help themselves and others, by doing this it will reduce the number of suicides in the world. Even those suffering do not know a lot about their illness, therefore do not know to help themselves. The responses from their survey show that young people think mental health should be spoken about more, they also think that it should be more well-known as to what it is, what I mean by this is a lot of people do not understand what it is. For example, some parents may say to their parents “it’s all in your head”, which yes, they are not wrong however they need to look at the bigger picture, most illnesses that you cannot see are pushed to side and seen as something that is not important. I think therefore a lot of people suffer alone, I would like to reduce this and the reason for this is because I think it is more important to be happy, taking days off because of mental health is a good enough reason! Some people that did this survey made comments about how “they are men” therefore “no one cares”, which is not true, however I can see why they said this because men are well-known to be tough and strong and not show emotions, although I think people need to get out of stereotypes because they are very negative. I think everyone should be able to show emotions and not be judged or must worry about others’ opinions, we should all support each other, you don’t have to love each other, just be there for them. Like a lot of bullies in school, have a story behind to why they do it, like for example family issues, any excuse is not acceptable, although I am a big believer in “everything happens for a reason”, whether that reason is positive or negative, there is always a reason, this goes for absolutely everything, from people you meet to situations happening to you. Overall, I think this survey made people learn a lot, like those that did not have an answer for some questions hopefully they will learn more about the topic because it is more important than most would think. It also helped me because I know what to include in my report now, to help educate others more on the topic, I think it is important to get other people’s opinions and the reason for this because their opinion matters, it’s them that’ll share your work and get you more well-known. It is like when you read reviews on a product, the reviews are what makes you buy the product.
Survey 2: Mental Health in film
Doing this survey was helpful for me this is due it showed that some took the survey seriously and some did not, however knowing the kinds of camera angles to use, the reason for this is because it helps to know how people would like to view something with this topic. Another thing that was helpful to know is that all the people that did the survey think that a film with this topic should include voiceovers, the reason why they think this is because it helps to understand how someone is feeling. Most of the people that took the survey think that a film/documentary about mental health and they think this because it would help spread awareness. A lot of the people that did the survey have seen films/documentaries of this topic and I think this is good because it shows they want to learn more about the topic. Overall doing this survey was helpful this is because it showed me how to show a film/documentary that would appeal to the target audience. This is helpful because it allows the film/documentary to help others more which is the whole point in doing it, to spread awareness and reduce the number of suicides happening in the world. This survey was also part of my codes and conventions because I asked my target audience what they think I would need for equipment, knowing this will make me more organised when it comes to filming because I know what I will need.
Survey 3: Production techniques
The reason why I did this survey is because I wanted to see what production techniques people think I should, some people that did this survey was part of my target audience, however not all, I did this because I wanted to get an opinion from everyone because my target audience is teen and above, therefore it is a wide range of people. People’s responses to this survey were very helpful because they all took it seriously, even if people did not know much about the topic, they still answered the questions even if their answer was “?”, this is still helpful because it shows me that they need to know more about the topic, therefore showing why they are part of my target audience. One of the questions I asked was “Who do you think should be the target audience for a documentary about mental health?” I got some useful responses from this like for example: “people who are blind or ignorant to mental health”, this is interesting because I think this is one of my main audiences and with someone agreeing with what I have said, this makes it clear that people need to open their eyes to how bad mental health can be, therefore I am making my documentary. However, two people said “everyone”, then when I asked, “why do you think this”, they said “everyone has and will experience a time in their life when they feel down. And people who’re relatively unaware could learn how if they or someone has a condition”, I like this response because I think it is interesting because it shows anyone can feel down, however with what this person has said it comes across like they think it is okay to self-diagnose, when it is not because even if you read every book, look at every website, you will never know 100%, unless you see a professional about it. Overall doing this survey was helpful because it has shown me that my target audience has no limit, anyone can watch it however, some people may not be able to watch it alone, what I mean by this is that people below teen may need a trusted adult to watch it with them because they may not understand what is being shown/said, therefore may think it is encouraging them into feeling how the person telling their story is feeling, when that is the opposite to what I am trying to do. Even if I put a trigger warning at the beginning, some people may not understand that because of their age or condition (etc.), therefore watching it with someone may help to support them as it may bring up past events for them, causing emotions.
These surveys are different but also similar at the same time (the first and second), the reason for this is because they are both about the same topic, however on is about mental health and it was done to see how much people know about the topic, although the other one was done to see how a film/documentary should be presented, knowing this will attract more viewers and get it more well-known, this is a positive due to it reducing more and more suicides and encouraging people to speak up. However, my final survey is like my first one because they both relate to the topic in some ways, however my first survey is just about the topic itself, but my third survey is about the production side of things, however it also links in with target audience. Although my second survey and third are similar because they both link to production, however in different ways because my second survey is asking what kind of camera angles (etc.), needs to be used, I wanted to know what kind of view my target audience wanted, however from my third survey I wanted to find out what kind of editing techniques they wanted, who they think should see it and I did this to get help on who to make it appeal to, also with the final product.
Test shots
Why I did it?
I did this so that when it comes to filming my documentary, I am more organised, can just set up and do it, seeing which angles work best. I wanted to figure out what lighting would work best, for the test shots I did, I used a natural lighting, however this can be changed when it comes to filming, however I do think natural lighting looks the best. I also wanted to see what would look good for b-roll because then I can quickly get that done, after filming the actual documentary, this is due to b-roll not taking long, it is there to keep the audience focused and show them a change in angles.
Why it was helpful?
This was helpful now that I have done this, I will be more organised when it comes to filming because I know where I want the camera to be placed, where Alex needs to sit, for it to get the best set up. Also, briefly doing some shots of b-roll was useful because b-roll does not take long to film as it is, therefore doing some test shots of it, means I will be able to get this done even quicker, which is helpful because this means I will have more time for editing. I did some b-roll of Alex and just of nature this is because I want to include some b-roll with and without Alex in because I think this will make my product more interesting. I want to include b-roll of nature because I think it relates to mental health as they are both natural things, therefore they are like each other.
Which I like/dislike?
I do not like the shot of Alex with the kitchen in the background because the lighting did not look how I wanted it to, what I mean by this is that it was too dark, not only this but with it being a kitchen, there was a lot of things behind him, like the sink, pans (etc.) (etc.), therefore this would lose the audiences focus from Alex on to that and I want the focus to be just Alex because this will get his point across better, making people pay attention to him more, I will be filming from more than one angle and including b-roll, however while Alex is being shown I want him to be the focus. However, I did like the shot of him sat in front of some draws, this is because it is a plain white wall, there is not much behind him, therefore he is the focus which is a positive because this will allow the audience to focus and listen to what he has to say more, compared to if the background had a lot going on. I also did some panning shots of the flat because this shows the viewers where it is filmed and get an overview of what is being shown, I will use this as b-roll, I like this shot because it adds character due to it showing the audience where it is filmed. When I film my documentary, I will also do a panning shot of the outside of his flat because this will be good for the audience, to see and understand where he lives, as he may talk about it because it may be part of its story. I also did a panning shot outside, however I do not like this shot because I panned it around too quick, therefore you cannot really see what is being shown and it would’ve only been used as b-roll, I think it important for it to be clear as to what is being shown. I also did a shot of Alex walking in front of the camera outside, I like this shot because I think it would be good to use as b-roll especially because he is being in my documentary, therefore I think with him being in some of the b-roll is makes sense. I did a mid-shot of Alex just stood outside, however I do not like this that much as I think it is too random, therefore it does not look natural, and I want most of my documentary to look natural. I did a close of Alex looking into the distance, I like this shot as it shows detail, helping the audience get understanding as to who he is and understand his story better, therefore I think it would look good as b-roll. I did a panning down shot of Alex, and I like this because they can see who he is, and this may help my viewers to get a better understanding of him and his story. I did a panning shot of trees/sky and I like this shot but it would be 100% better if it was not as fast because then it would look more professional, helping to attract more of an audience. I did a panning shot of a tree, and I did this because I think it shows growth as trees grow, change, and get cut down every day therefore I think it relates to mental health because of this.
Outcome of secondary research
Relevant subject research
For this I researched different types of mental health, I also included photos, I did this so I could have a better understanding of them, even though some of these I have myself, everyone has it differently, therefore you can always learn more about it, I think the photos helped me as well as reading about it, this is because it shows how it is, this is important as it is what I am trying to show. I found this helpful due to it making me understand some of the different types in more detail, knowing this will help to know how to approach the topic, without offending people, although this cannot be guaranteed as everyone is triggered in different ways, by different things, however I will put a trigger warning at the beginning, to help my audience avoid this. Some of the mental health types had more information than others, however this may be due to there not being a lot to say about it but, I do think there should be more said on each type of mental health overall worldwide, I think this because it is pushed aside a lot and not taken as serious as it should. I only researched the mental heath types that Alex (the interviewee) has this is because they are the ones that are relevant to my documentary, even though some other types maybe mentioned within the product, with being part of the facts and statistics, they are the most relevant. Even though he has all of these, and I have written about them, it is still his choice if he wants to mention each one, he will say what he is comfortable saying. Overall, after doing this, I feel more confident with making my documentary and will have a better understanding of it, this will be helpful when it comes to editing.

I watched Dunkirk for this because it is about the War, which can trigger PTSD, Alex does not have this however, it was still interesting learning more about it, what I mean by this is that it can be triggered by anything, at any time, anyone can get it from doing anything, it simply depends how you are affected by things. Seeing this was really eye opening because it is based on a true story, you can really see the emotion within the film because you can see it in the actors faces, how they are moving. The film is picturesque because of where it is filmed, the sea is beautiful, the sky, the weather for parts of the film is incredible. The fear in the actors’ eyes when bombs hit, is all over their face, the panic, screaming, not knowing what to do. “He’s not himself, may never be again”, this is a quote said in the film about someone that had been to war and a young boy asked if that person was okay, that was the man’s response, being apart of something so intense and hard hitting, would stay with you forever and you would need serious help, recovering fully would not happen however therapy, medication (etc.). I have learnt that even if acting is involved it can still come across as real, if it is based on a true story, I found this interesting as I was sure I wanted to just use people mental health, so it was coming from a personal point of view, allowing audiences to learn more. However, after watching this film has shown me that including both sides are important, so that people can understand the story, I know it is not a film, it is a documentary but seeing it from other people’s point of view is good for the audience, so that more people can relate, and I can help more people. From this I will remember to use different camera angles, variety looked amazing in Dunkirk, they would change from a bird’s eye view of people covering from the bombs to a worm’s eye view of the plane, showing the reaction and what is causing them to react, doing this gave me a better understanding as to why they did this. I will do this in my documentary by when interviewees are speaking about a certain topic within mental health, I will include facts and statistics related to what is being said, helping the audience to get a better understanding, helping more people. This was helpful as it has shown me how PTSD can be triggered, even though this may not be mentioned within the documentary, it is very useful for life in general, however I do not know how to tell when someone has it. I really enjoyed this film because it shows how the war effected people in a realistic way, this makes it more believable for people, giving them a feel for how it was for them. The acting in this film is incredible, you can really see the emotion, in their eyes, on their face, this just adds to the emotion even more, makes it feel like the audience is there. However, one thing I do not like about this film is that it does not mention mental health, although it is not about mental health itself, but it can tigger mental health issues, being apart of something so intense and extreme.
I also watched ‘thirteen reasons why’ because this is about a girl that tries to kill herself, it shows the different reasons why she did it, I find this series really educational because it shows there is always a reason as to why people take their own life, there will be a different reason for everyone and they will make that aware in their own way, or they will not make it aware at all. Main reason why I watched this series is because of the beginning of the first episode, this series was reported because of it not having a trigger warning when it first came out, therefore then they made one. Researching this was helpful due to it showing me how important it is to have a trigger warning at the beginning of a series/film/tv show/anything with this kind of serious topic. To avoid the wrong type of audience and sending the wrong message. From watching the first episode, it was very helpful because of the content warning that they use at the beginning, telling people what is going to be involved in the series, the kinds of things it shows and talks about. This is something I am going to use in my documentary because it gives the audience a chance to decide whether this is the series for them or not, this also avoids triggering anyone. They also put a website on screen at the start of the episode, the website is where people can get help, talk about their feelings. It is effective the way that they show the main character Clay, he had feeling for Hannah (the girl that killed herself), so it shows the true emotion. I like how this series is presented, it is very professional and respectful of people that have mental health themselves, this is due to the content warning, they make people aware what is going to be mentioned before the series even begins. I also like that they change the colour correction when showing the flashbacks because it shows the difference between past and present. I do not particularly dislike anything about their show, it is just not something I would not personally choose to watch this as it is quite upsetting to see, even though it is not based on a true story, things that are shown and said in this show do happen in day-to-day life.
Skills
Changing the camera angles from a wide angle to something completely different is quite interesting, this is something I learnt from watching Dunkirk, I think it is effective because it allows the audience to see the settings/characters/props (etc.), from different points of view, helping them to understand what is going on. Changing the types and styles of music being played, to match what is being shown, this is something I learnt from watching Dunkirk, for example when a really tense scene was on like when they are being bombed, the music would be very upbeat, fast and intense, like the scene, I think it really adds to the scene, making audiences be more engaged in what they are seeing due to it adding the stress, feeling more real. From watching thirteen reasons why, I have learnt that it is important to include a content warning at the beginning of the product, not only this but also to include resources of where people can get help because this avoids triggering people, causing negative energy for viewers seeing the product, this may cause negative view on the product, leading to hate comments, getting reported. Therefore, I think it is so important to include this as keeping the positive audiences, making sure that if personal/extreme topics, making sure to provide services where people can get help is beneficial. This is due to this helping other, encouraging them into getting help, not only this but it is normalising the convocation, doing this may make others start talking about their issues and getting the help they need and deserve.
Equipment and resources
I did this to learn more about the practical side of things, due to me wanting to be a producer I am never really involved in the technical side of production, I usually am part of being the team leader, as this is something I enjoy more. But I think knowing more about each part of production, this is so I can gain experience and learn more, making me standout more. This was really helpful as it showed me things I would not class as being important like for example: devices you use to edit, SD cards, equipment bag, I think this because I did not know SD card were different, I knew there was different sizes, although I did not know they all worked differently and that having a non-branded one can be less effective and more of a risk, compared to having a branded one, so having a branded one is the safer option. I thought all devices would work in the same way, with the same software, although it depends on the speed of the device, how it operates, what you are editing. Equipment bags as well, I have never considered this to be important, although when thinking about it, that is what holds all of your things together, what you carry them around in, so they are used quite a lot, it think it is just unnoticed, but having a good quality equipment bag is essential due to it being used every time the equipment is being used, therefore it needs to be strong as camera, tripods (etc.) are not exactly heavy but they are not light either, so something that is strong and can stand up right is really essential. Another thing I found useful from this video was that he recommends: different camera, tripods, equipment bags (etc.), everything he spoke about he had recommendations for, this will be beneficial for people who are new to making/taking videos/photography and with it coming from someone who makes videos themselves, the video is unsponsored by any of the brands. People know that it is coming from a factual/personal, point of view, which I think has the biggest impact on people. Due to it being real, like he is not mentioning these products due to it getting him more money, he is doing it because he uses them himself and wants to help others. I like that he does not disclose on what the equipment cannot be used for because it can be used for anything, even though some equipment will be specialised in certain products. He also makes it clear to “get what works for your budget”, this is a really important point as it shows people, to set their own limits, even with a low budget they can still do this. He is so genuine from start to end of this, showing his real and true opinion of what he thinks is needed, what he thinks are good products to use. This is a positive as it shows realness, he means what he is saying, doing this will get more people viewing his videos as it is not coming from a fake point of view. He showed an example of the difference between the camera microphone and an actual microphone, I liked this because it gave myself a better understanding of what he meant. The only thing I did not like about this video is that he did not show all products in use, however this is something that can be quite time consuming. From watching this video I will remember to not take my camera bags for granted as they are a lot more handy than I realised, another thing I will take from this video is that SD cards quality can effect the whole product.
Production techniques
Video 1
I did this because I looked on YouTube for editing technique videos and this is the one that stood out to me, I would rather watch multiple small videos than one big one, this is because I think it allows more learning, due to more being said in less time and this is more effective. For this I took screenshots of the video, making notes on what was happening and said what I would use. I think this video was helpful because there are some techniques in it that I plan to use in my edit, however I will need to re-watch this video when it comes to editing, although at least I know where to go for help. Not all the techniques in this video were helpful, this is because some of the techniques was for photos and I do not think I will be using photos within my product but, if I do, I can use this video to help me make it look the most professional it can. I really liked the technique that was used for text, this is because I think it looks really professional, stands out, I think I will use this for my project because it makes it look professional and I have not seen it be done before, also I think it is relevant to my project because it is clear, like glass, therefore relates it the topic of my project because it is real, what it is, is what you see, there is nothing to hide. This was helpful, and I learnt a lot from it like I found how I want text for the title of the documentary, this will save time when it comes to editing.
Video 2
This was good for speed of editing because he gave good tips like “hot keys”, what this means is how to use the keyboard instead of the mouse, there is a button for everything on the keyboard, this will save a lot of time during editing because I will not be search for it on the screen, I can just press a button, however I think I would struggle remembering which key is for what, although may remember some, therefore it will save me some time. I found this video helpful because of this, however I skipped the rest of the video because he was just speaking about photography, and I am not using photography in my edit.
Video 3
I found this video helpful because he explains each technique in full detail, he does not rush it, therefore I get a better understanding as to what he is doing, some of the techniques he used will be helpful for my project, making it stand out and look professional. I think if I was following this video along, I would find it really quick and easy to do, even though this video is the longest one out of the three I watched, I found it the most helpful due to the way he described what he was doing, making more sense to me than the other videos.
I watched all these videos as I do not know a lot about editing, apart from basic editing, therefore learning more about it is really interesting and helpful to me, even though I do not wish to be an editor, it is still helpful for the future, as I want to be a producer or director, therefore, I will have some input when it comes to editing, so knowing what I want from the editor is important because it makes me look more professional. Not only this but if you give good ideas for editing, people will recognise this and may make it a bigger role for you, this is a positive because it means getting recognised more, therefore having more job opportunities, meaning help in working my way up in the film industry. This is due to, the more roles you can do, the more likely you are going to be spoken about, so even if I do not know a lot about editing, just knowing some ways of doing it, looks good on an application, as it may be a starting role for a job, like editor’s assistant, this may be unlikely, but it is still a possibility. I know I do not want to be an editor, but I want to be able to do each role to at least a basic level. Overall, I think video 3 was the most helpful because he explained everything in full detail, every tip he said I think I will use as it is relevant to my documentary, therefore helping it to be the most professional it can be. Video 1 and 2 was helpful, although with them being shorter videos meant they did not include as much information, however video 3 included 8 tips in one video, however I will use techniques from all three videos, therefore I found this video helpful as I think it will improve my editing skills. However, I do think I will use most of the techniques from video three because not only are they more relevant to my documentary, but it also made more sense to me.
Relevant theories
I did this to get a better understanding of which genre my product is because with knowing this it will affect how I go on to approaching my product, so I know how to come across to my target audience. I think with doing this it will make a better product, not only this but I think it will be presented in a more professional way.
Video 1
This was helpful in the way that it was coming from someone that teaches GCSE media, therefore it was on the professional level. She explained everything in a very brief way, therefore this reduced the amount of confusion I had. I like that she is a professional teacher so knows how to word things to her ideal audience, although she did it in such a brief way that I lacked in understanding in what she meant, therefore I do not think this was very helpful to me. She said a lot of statements which lacked explanation; however, she was explaining it as if it was GCSE questions, which may be beneficial to some people, but it did not for my product. One thing that she said which I liked, and I think was quite helpful was that genres are what they are, although they have changed over the years, she then goes on to saying the difference in marvel, this is useful to me as, everything is changing more and more every day. This effects my thinking by showing that this channel is not beneficial to the kinds of products/work I do, it is mainly a revision account for GCSE, therefore will not be using it again, although I have learnt some things from it, not enough for watching anymore videos.
Video 2
This was helpful in he way that it showed what each genre/type of documentary is, with knowing this it has shown me how I need to make my documentary come across, to come across to my target audience. Also, with it being an interview style video it has shown me show a professional interview looks, which is helpful and will be beneficial for my product. It is coming from a personal point of view, what he is saying is what he thinks, and this is helpful because it shows he has knowledge on the topic. I like that everything said in this video is his own opinion because it is real, what he is saying is what he thinks and knows, I think this makes it more educational with him going off what he knows himself. I do not like that this video is so delayed, this is something that cannot be helpful, as it is due to how he speaks I think, if it was more straight to the point, this would help his point of view come across in a more effective way. I think he should’ve either briefly or in-depth spoken about famous theories because this would help people to get a better understanding of what is being said. From watching this video, it has shown me that everyone approaches speaking about things in their own way, however, not every way is going to be beneficial to peoples learning and understanding of topics. But it is important to remember that it is nobody’s fault and that there are many other options to use for help.
Video 3
This was helpful in the way that it showed that everything is changing every day due to technology and everything developing, which is a positive in some ways, although will take some getting used to. I like that everything in this video is explained in full detail because it made everything make sense, less confusion. It is very engaging, there was not a moment I lost focus while watching this, this makes viewers pay attention more. I do not like that in the title of this video it says someone who is famous for genres theories, making the audience, including myself think that this is what the video is based on because it is confusing, he does mention it slightly, however, not enough to make it into the title of the video, I think it is very miss leading. It has affected my thinking by showing me that not everything you read is true, talking about the reference in the title again, it is very unprofessional and wastes some peoples time, although this video could be helpful to some people, some people may of clicked on this video to learn more information about that certain theory and then realise it does not mention it enough, in which then he is losing viewers. It has shown me to check comments before watching a video SOMETIMES, as it saves time being wasted later.
Codes and conventions
I did this to get a better understanding of what is needed and expected from a professional documentary, as I am doing mine about mental health it is a very serious and triggering topic, therefore knowing how to present it in a way that is going to avoid triggering others, is useful, not just for this product, but for future products also. This was helpful because he goes into detail for each part for each point he made, this gives a better understanding, he says why to use certain angles for the interviewee’s and why to change them, this is explained in a really simple but effective way, when people are just saying a load of statements, it does not help with remembering what is being said, although when it is broken down and explained, it is more of use. I liked that he did not go at a fast speed of just saying statements because statements are useful to know, spite of the fact that this can be of service to some people, everyone is different in the way they learn and remember things, nevertheless this was just the way that worked for me personally. Favourable of that, I also liked that he explained things in a simple amount of detail due to this making it easier to remember, therefore making it more instrumental for other, not everyone as it depends on how people learn. It has shown that just by making small changes to a product, whether this is in research, planning, filming, editing (etc.), it can be productive, this makes the product a lot more professional and presentable, making it stand-out more and be a bigger focus.
Advice on making first film
I did this to be come more educated on making films because I think it will help to make a professional product, that will help people. This was helpful in the way that the way things were explained, it was done in a very simple/successful way, what I mean by this is that I understood everything that was said due to the way it was said and the way it came across to me. He spoke about thing I have never thought of when it comes to a documentary, like characters/main characters, even so including this is powerful as it gives the audience someone to focus on, to follow their story, to get a better understanding of them as a personal, to show the difference between their answers compared to the other interviewee’s. For my documentary the “main character”, is Alex, him telling his story and how it has affected him. I like the ways things are explained because there is not confusion, it is straight to the point and has the right amount of detail. Another thing I like is that he has four main point, but they all link together as well as being different because gives a better understanding to what is being said. I would not say that there is anything that I dislike about this video, I think it is all very useful. This has taught me that even documentaries can tell a story, not all as it depends how you approach it, but how this is done is interesting as some of these points made in this video will help some people, but others will help others, this video can help a lot of people but in so many ways. It has shown me that the way that things come across the audience is one of the most important things, also having either a story or topic, that is a choice that is needed to be made, both may be used however one of these will be the focus.
Now that I have completed the research I feel as if a weight has been lifted off my shoulders because it took me a long time to complete it fully, however now I have finished it fully, I am very proud of myself and I feel more confident when it comes to editing my product. I feel like I am more aware of how to approach my documentary, when it comes to structing it, this is a positive as it will make a more professional looking product, which will help and benefit more people. Another positive about finishing all my research and putting it on WIX, is that I do not need to worry about it later on in the project, this means less stress and I can focus more on the final edit and evaluation because the research section is done and out of the way, I am happy with the research because I have done each section that was asked for in a lot of detail, I have also explained why I did it, what I learnt (etc.). Research has a big impact on how the rest of the project is going to go due to it being how you have thought out the idea, gaining more information from people and places, is interesting.
The research has impacted the development of my FEP by teaching me new information that I did not know before, with knowing this information it will help with knowing how to approach the topic and getting the ideal grade. Also, knowing more about the topic is a positive as I now have a better understanding, this will be useful when it comes to editing and structing the product. Another thing, after doing test shots it has shown me what will work when it comes to filming, with knowing this it will save time, meaning more time for editing. However, I think with doing both primary and secondary in a large amount of detail, it has shown that not everyone’s opinion is useful, but you can still learn something from that part of the research, like some people take things more serious than others, sometimes people do not have an answer to everything, this is okay as the whole point of me doing my product is to educate people on the topic. It is important to get different types of people that are relevant to the topic, to be involved in primary research because this makes it more beneficial and useful to the final product, also asking the right questions is important, thinking about what you want/need to know. Despite the fact of this, secondary research can be unsuccessful sometimes, but you will only know this when it comes to watch/reading (etc.) the product, with even from doing unsuccessful research you can still learn from it.
My soft skills have developed from doing my focus group because I have never done one of these before, even though it was not successful/useful as I would’ve wished, I still learnt what I would do differently next time. Like for my focus group there was nine people, some of these people did not speak throughout, apart from saying their name, with knowing this I know next time I do not need this many people. This also improved my teamwork skills due to me having to be in charge or nine people, making sure that they stay professional, pay attention (etc.) I independently worked on my research, I had some help with some parts, but mainly it was on my own, this was a big confidence boost for me due to if it makes a mistake I only have myself to blame. Communication skills improved during doing the interviews and focus group due to having to speak to multiple different people, asking them different questions. Project management is something I improved on due to this being my own project, I am working on my own, very independent. Typing is something I have upgraded on, with how I word things it is a lot more professional and explained, giving people a better understanding. Multitasking is another thing I have built on in the way that I am dyslexic, therefore concentrating on more than one thing is something I struggle with, but I am becoming a lot better at it, the more I do it.
I do not think my aspirations have changed; I think that they have improved in the way that from doing my primary research, it has shown me why my target audience is who it is, due to them lacking in knowledge, in something that if they knew more it would change how they see and deal with certain situations. I think my product will help them with this because I hope it will educate them, getting them to help others, knowing how to approach situations better.
I could’ve done the interviews differently, in the way that I could have edited them all together, although this would have been quite time consuming, not only this but it also very unneeded, for research because they still come across in the same way, also I think with them being presented individually, it shows the difference between them more, giving a better understanding. For my focus group I would have had less people, people I know will give detailed answered for most questions, start to end, this would have made it a lot more educational and helpful. The tests shots, gotten some side angle shots as this would be good for the interview for the documentary. Surveys, I would say get people who are going to take it seriously to do it, but it is anonymous, therefore I cannot know who is going to do it, or who did put inappropriate answers on. All of my secondary I ma happy with, it is detailed and well explained and I have said why I did it, which I think is important because it gives myself and others a better understanding as to why I did it.
